Zeeland school bids come in way under budget

ZEELAND -- The bids for the second phase of Woodbridge Elementary School are 15 percent under budget.

The Zeeland school board on Monday approved 25 bids for its 33,000-square-foot addition to Woodbridge for $2.15 million, about $400,000 under budget.

"We're very pleased that we're in a bidding climate that is coming in lower than our projected costs," said Superintendent Gary Feenstra. "We're also seeing more local bidders."

Woodbridge, at 9110 Woodbridge St., is the newest of Zeeland's four elementary schools. It opened in the fall of 1996. The addition includes 11 classrooms, a multipurpose room and support space and will increase the building's capacity to 500. The work should be done by July, said district Business Manager David Van Ginhoven.

Lakewood Inc. of Holland is the board's construction management firm.

The first phase of the project included foundation and site work, which also came in under budget.

The Woodbridge expansion was part of a $7.59 million bond issue approved by voters in April.
