Hope College –
Graves Hall

Holland, MI

An adaptive restoration to Hope College's 3rd oldest building brought this facility into the modern era while returning it to its original glory. The addition to the building was added to accommodate a new elevator shaft for full accessibility. The facility now houses 5 classrooms for Hope students, a 163 seat Winants Auditorium, the President's Room, a conference room and the Schoon Meditation Chapel.
Long term weather damage to the exterior stone was repaired or replaced. Similar rock sandstone had to be quarried, cut, and shaped before delivery and installation and interior wood work was replaced to match the original details.

* $ 5.7 M Renovation
* Originally built in 1894
* Total S.F. - 20,400
* Additional space added - 1,600 S.F.
* 163 Wiinants Auditorium
* 5 Classrooms

Lakewood Construction has a longstanding relationship with the college, and we were pleased to be able to have Lakewood act as the construction manager for the Graves Hall project. One key element of the project was the interior woodwork that needed to be replicated as part of the historic renovation. The craftsmanship exhibited by Lakewood’s own carpenters was exceptional and set the standard for the rest of the trades. A blending of old and new wood was achieved in a way that brought out the original character of this 1894 building.

All of the trades involved performed at very high levels; from the extensive stone repair and replacement on the exterior to the complicated mechanical installation in the 100-plus-year-old structure. Lakewood Construction coordinated all aspects of this project with precision and attention to detail. The project came in on time and under budget; a remarkable feat considering all of the unknowns going into this historic renovation and adaptation project. The end result is one the college and the contractors are very proud to present to our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members.

Thank you so much for the outstanding job you did on Graves. This building is now my favorite of all the buildings on Hope's campus. I have heard nothing but glowing remarks from those who are now using it or who have toured it. You should feel a great sense of pride in what you accomplished. Job well done!
