LEED Commercial Interior Certification for sustainability and environmentally conscious design
Renovation of an 80,000-square-foot warehouse/interior: 24,000 square feet of office area, training rooms, cafeteria, toilet and shower facilities, and an 8,000 square-foot mezzanine with an elevator
LEED features on the interior included:
• Low-emitting and regionally produced materials
• Additional daylight for new office areas
• Automatic daylight sensing lighting control
• High-efficiency HVAC filters and programmable controls
• CFC-free refrigerants
• Fundamental commissioning
• Waterless urinals and low-flow lavatories, showers, and water closets
• Energy Star appliances
• Refurbished furnishings
• High-recycled content building materials and construction recycling

The interior is now a smoke-free work environment and there is an educational program for employees and visitors.
The exterior included native/drought resistant plantings, no permanent irrigation system, and bicycle racks. Lakewood’s project involved extensive sitework to accommodate additional truck traffic, private bus and van drop-off/pick-up for employees. Storm water detention was another element within the project.
Kandu partners with local, regional, and national manufacturers for cost-efficient services that, in turn, provide employment opportunities for physically and mentally challenged adults. This central facility combined the functions of the organization’s Holland and Grand Haven operations.
