Ottawa County Road Commission Calls On Lakewood
Lakewood Inc. is pleased to have broken ground on a new maintenance facility for the Ottawa County Road Commission. The new facility, located on a new site at 120th & Ransom in Holland Township is scheduled to be ready for a late spring 2002 occupancy.
Originally the road commission was going to demolish the existing Zeeland facility and construct a new maintenance facility on the current site, but after careful consideration of the existing location, facility, property size, and expansion opportunities, the Lakewood Inc. Construction Managemen team determined it would be advantageous to build on a larger site. Unlike the existing congested site, the new twenty acre site includes a 62,000 square foot maintenance garage with heavy equipment parking and administrative offices, a 17,000 square foot cold storage building, laydown areas for a variety of widely used materials, and a future salt storage facility. GMB Architects Engineers of Holland, Michigan is the architect for the project.
The Ottawa County Road Commission is responsible for the maintenance of 1,614 miles of county owned roads within the county, including both paved and gravel surfaces. The Zeeland facility is responsible for 604 miles of that total, and their duties include shoulder maintenance, snow removal, pothole maintenance, gravel grading, and in certain instances, total street reconstruction. They are also responsible for the maintenance of 20 miles of state highways, including I-196 and US-31. Providing all of these services includes keeping a fleet of 33 vehicles operable, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
