Lakewood Selected For South Haven Project
City officials and construction personnel ceremonially broke ground for a new public works facility for the City of South Haven. The facility is scheduled to be completed in late summer of 2002.
Centrally located on the east side of the Blue Star Highway between Phoenix Rd., and M-43, the new facility lies on approximately 10 acres of land. Site construction for the 48,000 square foot facility had already begun in order to meet the schedule requirements for the city. The new facility will include 5,500 square feet of administrative offices, approximately 4,500 square of maintenance shop, 26,000 square feet of vehicle storage and 12,000 square feet for warehousing.
City Manager Kevin Anderson commented that the importance of this project is not limited to being a new facility for the Public Works Department, but is actually a first step in the redevelopment of the city's waterfront. The existing Public Works facility, located on the downtown waterfront will be torn down, and the land be made available for development more in tune with the current uses of the downtown core area.
The construction management team led by Lakewood Inc. has worked extensively with city officials to select the current site, design a facility that meets their requirements, while maintaining their goals for budget and schedule.
