Sustainable Design - Zeeland West High School
Lakewood Construction Management Services led the construction of the new Zeeland West High School, a national showcase of sustainable building design. This 3 year, $19,000,000 project consists of 172,000 sq. ft. of environmentally-friendly classrooms, administration, athletic facilities, mechanical and energy systems. The client, architect and construction team succeeded in reducing the negative environmental impact and high operating costs associated with many building projects. The common goal and high level of communications contributed to a project that was delivered on time and under budget. Equally important, officials estimated that first year energy savings alone reached $50,000.

Green Construction

In addition to positioning the facility for maximum day lighting, and with minimal site maintenance, the construction process employed green practices at every step: construction debris was recycled to avoid landfill disposal; recycled construction material was used wherever feasible; and local materials were used to minimize long distance hauling. Many green design features have been incorporated into Zeeland West High School, including the following:

Site Work: Development of constructed wetlands

Architectural: Extra insulation in walls and roof, Energy Star white roof, Low-E double and triple pane windows, daylight roof clerestory windows, airlock vestibules

Mechanical: Earth coupled heat pump station (no boilers), variable volume pumping system, advanced technology energy recovery system, occupancy sensors for heating and AC controls, ultra high efficiency hot water heating system, emergency generator heat recovery

Electrical: High efficiency lighting design, motors & transformers; photovoltaic (solar to electricity) power system; wind energy system generating electricity; automatic daylight harvesting
