“We really had a great team that worked together collaboratively on workflow,” said Todd Knight, MSN, RN, CVRN, Assistant Vice President of Clinical Services. “The architect, designers, the staff, the physicians, they all had input at the table. I’ve built about four labs in my career. This is by far — it’s the Taj Mahal of labs.”
Amidst a major hospital-wide renovation and remodeling project, Holland Hospital had an area of 13,000 square feet available for future needs and services. Located directly beneath the new West Michigan Heart Center, this shell space was perfectly suited for a new cath lab, a much-needed service in this lakeshore community.
As a joint venture project with another local construction management firm, the new cath lab allows for expanded services offered on site. The new space consists of a catheterization lab, a special procedures lab, a reception area, staff training room, a staff break room, and a central nursing station area surrounded by 10 patient rooms with beds and bathrooms. The lab also has the latest in cardiovascular imaging equipment.
The project contained the typical constraints associated with healthcare construction--noise, vibration, negative air pressure, logistic constraints, cleanliness, etc. Connections to existing systems were coordinated weeks in advance to minimize downtime and completion of the work was scheduled for off hours.
From a community perspective, this much needed, world-class lab offers a place for West Michigan lakeshore patients with short-stay cardiac, telemetry, and interventional radiology needs to go.
